Special correspondent notes visits and gatherings in the Ireton and Le Mars region. Fred and Mrs. Gronemeyer stopped at the Henry Mammen home, while other neighbors called on the Hill Bord ers and Claus Siebens households. Gert Siebens attended a sale near Le Mars and Christmas dinner guests included Hilbert Hennigs family, Herman Kruse, and Jack Ludwigs. George Miller and son shopped in Le Mars, and Ella Ludwigs celebrated her 19th birthday with relatives including Haage, Mammen, Ruble, and Ludwigs families.
A long list of Grant township and nearby residents attended birthday celebrations and holiday gatherings. Names include Ella Siebens, Mrs Claus Siebens, Fred Ludwigs, Hilbert Hennigs, Herman Kruse, and many others from Mammen, Brunsville, Ruble, Craig, and Le Mars. Visitors from California and Kansas City also noted.
Beaubien home welcomed residents from Akron including Mr and Mrs Elmer Kapfer and daughter Mrs Jno Faust jr and children Wm Faust Philip Beaubien jr and Mr and Mrs Levi Kapfer and daughter for a family gathering.
The United States Weather Bureau forecasts for January 11 to 16 snow in the eastern portion of the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri Valleys on Monday with more snow around Wednesday or Thursday, temperatures near or below normal. Snow is expected in the Northern and Central Great Plains Tuesday or Wednesday and again Saturday, with temperatures largely near or below normal. Local observer D N Zeig logs temperatures from January 4 to 10 and notes 4 inches of new snow on January 8, bringing ground snow to 15 inches.
Miss Eleanor Louise Yerkes became the bride of Paul Grier principal and athletic coach at Remsen high school in Tama Iowa on December 31. Grier, from Guernsey Iowa, is a State Teachers College graduate and Lambda Gamma Nu member who taught in Guernsey and Brooklyn before joining Remsen last fall. They plan to resume school work after a brief honeymoon and a joint YMCA YWCA party is planned Friday night with a short program, games, and refreshments.
Le Mars junior class staged the three act mystery comedy Officer 666 on Thursday evening. Cast members worked through the Christmas break to meet high standards set by coach Miss McIntosh. Charles Honnold played Alfred Wilson who steals Travers Gladwin’s valuable pictures while courting Helen Burton played by Gladys Lippke. Walter Koenig as Gladwin returns from abroad and, with Whitney Barnes played by Hodarn, become involved in adventures, rescue Helen and the pictures, and even the thief from the police.
Barnes falls for Sadie Small while Bette Beachler shines as Sadie in a lively production. Gladwin foils Wilson’s elopement plans by borrowing Officer 666’s uniform. Mary Jean Lee plays Helen’s witty aunt and a parade of characters fills out the cast with humor. The high school orchestra, led by Mr. Gibbons, performed between acts.
In Plymouth County Iowa The Le Mars Globe-Post publishes probate notice for the estate of Arnold Ahlfs deceased with heirs Mary Ahlfs Anna Frerichs Elmer Frerichs Darline Frerichs and other interested parties. The court fixed February 5 1987 at 10 a m for final proof and hearing to admit the will to probate. Roseberry Pitts attorneys for the estate. Earl F Remer Clerk of the District Court.
Struble residents and relatives visit Sioux City and Clear Lake while relatives travel for a funeral in South Dakota. Roy Sampson drawn as petit juror in Sioux county court at Orange City.Mrs. Orpha Nobie and Irene attend funeral of Mark Van Steenwyk in Clear Lake then visit Summit. Irene leaves for Thurston to teach. Dr Bendixon visits Oltmann with flu. Congratulations to Joe and Cecelia Forkenbrook on marriage at St Josephs. J H Werley passes away. survived by daughter, five sons, four grandchildren. Clyde Keough of Le Mars mentioned in closing.
Spent the past two weeks in the N R Schlesser home and returned to Le Mars Monday. Mrs Lawrence Renken has been sick but is improving. Dr Bendixen of Ireton is the attending physician. Miss Vivien Schlesser and pupils of Grant No 9 gave a delightful program Thursday with an appreciative audience, followed by refreshments. Miss Ida Mentzer returned to Akron, Miss Alice Degan to Des Moines, and Miss Viola Henrich to Spencer where they teach, after a two week holiday with relatives. Mrs Chas Noble and son Gerald spent part of last week in the W G Garr home in Le Mars. Miss Vivien Schlesser returned Sunday after visiting Miss Madonna Donovan in Sioux, as the H G Oltmann home is under quarantine for scarlet fever.
