The Ladies of the Order of Eastern Stars hosted a New Year’s Day reception for Masons and friends in the Masonic hall. The hall featured holly, festoons, and rose shades, with music by Mrs. Spotta, Mrs. Zink, Mrs. Ray, and Miss Werthwein. Volunteers served refreshments as Past Patrons and Matrons, led by Mesdames Adamson Struble Sammis Bush and Treats, welcomed attendees, wishing many blessings for the year ahead.

In district court Judge Judza Lutchingen set aside a deal in the case John Bleyer vs. A F Ludwig, finding fraud and reception harmed the plaintiff. Heyer will regain possession of the Brunswick hotel within two months, Ludwig keeps hotel rental, and Ladwig pays costs. Heyer's attorneys were Martin & Martin, Ladwig's Sammis & Bradley. Ladwig plans to appeal. Other motions and arguments were heard or taken under advisement in related cases. Little colds advertised remedies follow.

Mrs Peter Sheeren of a Le Mars area home, northwest of town, died Friday night after a rapid pneumonia onset. Born March 2, 1858 in Bureau County Illinois, she married Peter Sheeren in 1887 and moved to Plymouth County the same year. Survived by husband and four children James, Larre, Josephine, John, plus four brothers and three sisters in Illinois. Funeral at St James church conducted by Rev Father O Farrell. Numerous local residents noted her Christian character and community presence.

John Carel of Lincoln township died December 28 at 6 p m after a two year lung illness. Born in Grant county Wisconsin about 44 years ago he settled in Lincoln township in 1882. He married Catherine Britt in 1888 and they had six children four living. Survived by his mother and several siblings. Funeral at St Joseph's Nep tune with Rev Tierney officiating. Pallbearers named. He was a devout Catholic and died fortified by church rites.
