In grade reports, students showcase Christmas trees, penmanship honors, and spelling excellence. Activities include a wheat sprouting field, a moving picture project, and a classroom Christmas program. Notable names: Marian Rees, Dor othy Mauer, Gladys Bourne, Dick Hammer, Verna Anderson, and Larry Shostak among many.
Special correspondent notes Sunday and Tuesday visits across North Grant area. Families from Ireton and near Craig stopped by Mrs. Vanderham and Claus Siebens homes. Henry Sieben farm sale near Akron drew local attendees. Ed Plueger shelled coin midweek.
Grant residents attended candle-light services at Rev Belks church in Le Mars Sunday evening. Guests at Gerd von Hagel home celebrated his birthday with numerous families and a social evening of pinochle and lunch. Sioux City shoppers included Ernst Meyer and family, Charley Plueger and son Ernest, Regina Plueger, Will Johnson and Elmer, Dic Plueger and sons, John Lubben and family, Fred Plueger and family, and Berneice Winter who reminded Clara Plueger of her birthday.
Mr and Mrs Estill Parry of Sioux City were weekend guests in Walter Parrys home. Mr and Mrs Harold Warner visited with Mrs Warner s parents Mr and Mrs Bierman of Grand Meadow Sunday. Mr and Mrs Ed Twogood and Mr and Mrs Earl Austine were Sioux City shoppers Friday. Miss Nene Cliff of Kingsley visited Elen Eyres Saturday night. Garrett Boom of Walla Lake is visiting friends in Union two. Mrs E W Morton and Mrs Melvin Bolton were Sioux City visitors Thursday. Mr and Mrs H C Hoyt and daughters Almerta and Betty left Tuesday for California to visit Ruth Hoyt, Mrs Gene Parry, and other relatives. Mrs Melvin Bainbridge returned to her home last week from the hospital at Sioux City, and is much improved.
Journalistic and literary club events at the college featured a journalism class gathering hosted by teacher Robert Gillespie with games and carols and a buffet lunch. The Excelsior Literary Society held a yule lide program led by Miss Loretta Deal with poetry, descriptions of Pioneer Christmas, the White House Christmas, and Santa Claus town in Indiana. Decora tions were arranged by Mildred Speith and Clarke Bolser from Cedar Falls spoke on student employment opportunities.
Miss June Newkirk led an assembly program with a Christmas reading by Gladys Lipke and a mixed quartet, accompanied by Sylvia Irwin. The YMC A and YWCA plan a joint chapel with a Christmas theme next Wednesday. Golden Eagle cagers prep for a home win Wednesday against Yankton, as Drury emphasizes defense. Western Union hosts Penn College, both 8 p.m. starts. President D O Kime attended an Iowa Colleges meeting in Des Moines. schedules to be announced. A tentative western athletic conference idea may affect border colleges. Dr B F Zuehl attended a Minnesota meeting with six Midwest states. Freshmen week closed with humor skits and a surprise appearance by Dr A J H ue.
Des Moines reports Iowa county home costs climbed 13.05 percent or 91,129 dollars from 1935 to 1936. The Iowa Taxpayers Association notes average weekly cost per patient rose from 2.67 to 3.08 dollars, based on records from 96 county homes with an average population of 4,923. Two self supporting counties Franklin and Palo Alto profited, while ten low-cost counties averaged 77 cents per patient. If all counties used that rate, total cost would have been 197,117 dollars instead of 789,283, a saving of 592,166 dollars. Plymouth and nearby counties’ 1935-36 costs listed.
Fredonia relatives and friends gather at the Axel Petersen home Friday for Mrs Petersens birthday. Numerous visits occur Sunday afternoon at various homes including Mor tensen Juhl Kloster and Petersen households in Marcus LeMars Oyens and nearby areas. A District No 1 school program by pupils and teacher draws a large audience.
Nrs N Kloster and family and friends gathered at the To val Kloster home in Remsen to celebrate his birthday. The Fredénia Farm Bureau ladies hosted the second lesson on home furnishing, titled Place of Design In the Home, at Mrs. M Keffeler's house with Marion Remsen and Meadow noted for future follow up.
Tony Bamberg notes Gus Peck Foundry bowling Amazons posted a 2498 team score in local ladies league. He highlights Jim Dealy's ping pong, Bulldogs' fatal free throws, and Friday clash vs South Sioux City. Citters and Wiltgen praised for scoring bursts, Van Citters praised for leadership, prep for Mitchell game, and local hockey and basketball notes.
Union township Farm Bureau leaders studied Color and Design in the Home under Migs Lola Antisdel H D A on Tuesday at Mrs Calvin Eyres. A pot luck dinner followed, and afternoon singing featured songs chosen for this year’s study. Marion township guests attended, with next meeting planned at Mrs Henry Dempater on Jan 4.
