A train car collision in Hawarden leaves Ervin Edward Henry 62 a retired farmer of Hawarden Sioux County. Henry died at a Hawarden hospital after his car struck a first freight car behind a diesel engine of the Chicago and North Western train bound for Huron South Dakota. The sheriff said Henry apparently did not see the train.
Mr. Henry died from chest injuries after his car struck a low‑speed train as it climbed a steep incline. The vehicle’s steering wheel and column were bent, front end smashed, the train halted briefly for repairs. He was returning home to Hawarden from a Union County, S D farm. Survivors include his widow a daughter and a brother. He belonged to Hawarden Methodist Church. Highway Patrolman George Dunn and County Coroner Charles Van Der Ploeg investigated the accident. The train proceeded to Huron after delays.
Two Sioux City brothers Robert Shetill 27 and Elvin Sherrill 23 were charged with burglary in a break in at the Anderson garage Alcester South Dakota last Sunday. They waived preliminary hearing and were bound to circuit court with bond set at 1000 each. They were arrested at Akron Tennessee by Chief West Barr and sheriff Ekren said a signed confession was obtained. Barr reported a new battery two rolls of tape and a flashlight found in the car. The garage was entered by breaking a glass and operating a door lock from inside. An unsuccessful cash register attempt was made.
Doris Riter and Lily Hunt of Le Mars purchase the Penguin in Sheldon and plan to open in about two weeks. The shop will serve soda fountain specialties and lunches with redecorating and a new ice cream machine in place. The two families will move to Sheldon once homes are secured. they have children Tommy Patty and Jimmy. The Riters also sold the Food Center at Le Mars.
