Fire departments from Ovens Remsen and the Mats answered a call at the Ludwig farm on Highway 5 two miles east of Ovens Friday night. The barn alarm blew open followed by rapid flames that engulfed the yard, spreading to other structures as neighbors rushed to douse the fire. Mr. and Mrs Ludwig and children were away in Remsen. two uncles, Ben and Henry Liettel, were home. Grain and outbuildings suffered near total loss as the dry weeklong drought fueled the flames. only the house remained partially standing.
