Oldtimers recall the sight of grain shocks in Plymouth County as Robert Puhl farms six miles north of Le Mars on highway 75. He notes oats have long been shock threshed there and plans call for threshing this week amid favorable weather. Cal Stickel provides staff photos.
Debbie from Akron wins grand champion at the Plymouth county fair 4-H dress revue and will represent Plymouth county at the Iowa State Fair. Entrants were judged on appearance, modeling, 4-H records, and dresses. Also notes on hospital admissions and dismissals at Floyd Valley and extended care. Weather outlook predicts hot days with possible showers, cooling slightly later in the week.
Plymouth county board proceedings received by the Daily Sentinel show the 63rd General Assembly set county officials wages at 8500 per year including auditor recorder clerk and treasurer with 2000 raise. Deputies and law officers earnings also listed with specific names and amounts.
The Liberty Perry Pacers 4-H club swept honors at Plymouth county fair baby beef show. Barry Hageman, 17, won grand champion with a 945-pound Hereford, Veronica Vondrak, 16, took reserve grand with a 1,100-pound Hereford, and the club claimed the winning pen of five along with multiple breed champions and showmanship honors.

The Plymouth county fair ends tonight with a 7 30 p.m. beef sale in the arena and a 9 p.m. teen dance featuring the Cellophane Spectacle in Floyd Becker hall. Crowds approach 12 000 as area events and the Le Mars centennial draw attendees, with a 500 youth turnout for kids day and various competitions and exhibits concluding at 8 p.m.
Le Mars council shifts ward lines to comply with one man one vote. Boundaries move one block east and west to rebalance population, placing the Central gym polling site inside the third ward. Voting figures from last fall showed 900 in ward one, 700 in ward two, and 500 in ward three.
Barry Hageman and his father Everett Hageman of Merrill display the grand champion Hereford Ben the bull at the Plymouth County Fair. Barry earned the purple ribbon and trophy after long hours of care including brushing and last minute grooming for the exhibit.
