LCHS sent a large music group to the state solo and ensemble contest in Storm Lake on April 2. They earned a record total of twenty Division I ratings across instrumental and vocal divisions, with several soloists receiving top marks and multiple ensembles earning high ratings as judges noted stiff competition.
Ten LCUS delegates joined 24 schools from South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa at Worthington Minnesota on March 1 1966. The event split into Pro West Pro Soviet and Neutral bloc meetings debating Dominican Republic troops Kashmir and Red China seating in the Executive Council. Steve Beaman led the delegation praised for effectiveness and cooperation with others.
The Lite Theater at LOHS hosts FHA spring style show on April 14 at 3 45 and April 15 at 7 30 in play form. Seniors present clerks buyers observe materials tailoring price and accessories while juniors and sophomores model in tailored suits coats and dresses. The event demonstrates garment costs methods used in sewing and aims to reveal how the girls produced their outfits.
Linksters Schedule 21 meets this week as girls face Hawarden on Tuesday April 12 and boys meet Sheldon on Thursday at Le Mars Country Club. A preliminary April 1 session outlined golf etiquette and a point system for varsity selection. The 12 per team limit and 27 holes per player this week were set with eCards issued.
The junior class at LCHS plans for the junior senior banquet and prom with Dave Tone leading as president. Committees on decorations, entertainment, and invitations report progress and a speaker is awaited. Barbara Penning and the banquet committee have prepared the menu for submission to Westmar cafeteria cooks.
The event features junior and senior girls modeling formal wear sponsored by the Le Mars FIA chapter. A FINA program on state convention planning follows, with a nutrition skit by freshmen. Edith Johnson leads the style show and invites Le Mars families to attend across several dates in April and May at locations including Central S.C. and Heelan.
Delighted audiences supported the senior class treasury by netting 228650 after a slow start. Tuesday night showings completely packed the Little Theater with star Terry Van Maasdam delivering straight faced humor and poignant lines as the cast carried through their parts with strong authenticity.
Four student council delegates from each school met in Spencer to elect district officers and map future conventions. Le Mars Community High School sent Dave Tone and Ruth Trometer, with Tone winning an executive post while Trometer left with a commendable, but unsuccessful, bid for state cabinet. Candidates’ speeches featured a “Redeemer of the World” line and music by Dick Gearke, with criticism aimed at a female candidate who used the initials M. M. as “Mmm.”
Dan Tovland delivers a light Easter tale about a frantic Bunny racing to make eggs and the moral of one egg in hand being worth two in the bush. Mike Beech reports about forty students from the high school and freshmen voting with their feet for track, noting limited participation and calls for more support from Lorenzen.
The final performance night saw director William Jacobson honored with a large bunny and two baby bunnies to remember the production Harvey. Curt Bryant topped the University of South Dakota Science Fair with 100 dollars for the Science Club and a Dallas trip to attend the International Science Convention for his exhibit The Study of the Atmosphere. Richard Dykstra earned first in Chemistry for Paper Electrophoresis, Wayne Kramer won in Biology with a slide rule, Barb Brady earned a second in Chemistry, and Carlis Berkenpass received honorable mention in Biology.
A documentary titled Children of the Silent Night on educating deaf blind children will be shown at 2 40 and 3 40 on Tuesday April 12 in the Little Theater. The public is invited. The film follows a deaf blind child learning to hear through touch and introduces the Perkins School for the Blind Deaf Blind Department. It presents early teaching methods and the pioneering work of Dr. Sea ley Howe and Helen Keller.
LCHS bands present an April 13 evening of instrumental music in Carey Gym. Junior High Band led by Lynn Seip performs nine tunes including March Prelude and Hornascope with Mike Parkinson French Horn solo. Junior High Varsity Band follows. then Senior Concert Band directed by Joe Brice rounds out the program. A post concert coffee and cake fundraiser supports jet uniforms.
The FHA Appalachian clothing drive ends Friday, April 15, marking the second year of Save the Children Foundation's annual effort. Clean wearable garments gathered by the community will aid needy families in the Appalachian Mountain region, funding education for coal miner families.
