DES MOINES Iowa Governor Harold E Hughes says he had a hunch Johnson might withdraw and was as surprised as others when the President announced he would not seek reelection. Speculation grows that Hughes could be a Kennedy running mate amid Kennedy events in Des Moines and New York. A poll by the Iowa Daily Press Association taken before Johnsons decision shows Johnson leading by a narrow margin.

Farm Bureau women meet for dessert luncheon in Grant township

Grant township Farm Bureau women gathered March 28 at the home of Mrs. Earl Lubben for a dessert luncheon. Eleven members gave safety precautions in roll call. President Mrs. Henry Ahrendt urged election participation and issue research. Safety chairman Mrs. Harry Ludwigs spoke on tractor safety and chemical storage. Marketing chairman Mrs. Eldon Kallsen reviewed export statistics. The group planned October’s 10th anniversary of the Grant Farm Bureau and Farm Bureau in Iowa, with Mrs. John Lubben hosting an April 18 meeting. The Grant Clover Clovers 4 H club met at Cliff Peters home with Pat Renken presiding.

Dennis the Menace lunch cake and safety talks at school

In a school setting Dennis the Menace made an angel food cake later served for lunch. Beverly Van Buskirk led a talk on Play Safe When You Cook and Roxann Popken spoke on Totin Foods Safely. Barb Jansen discussed Food Habits in the School Lunch Room. Lunch was served by Jane and her mother Kristy Pecks. A salesman encountered bedbugs at a hotel, received a humbly apologetic letter, and realized his own letter was enclosed with scribbled notes. Card of thanks from Patel Sioux City hospital.
