The city election produced Democratic success with the entire city ticket and aldermen elected. RB Kain won reelection as mayor by a 340 vote margin against DC N Jones, while Geo Strieger defeated IT Buchanan by 97 and G M Smith beat James Love for assessor by 101. The LeMars Water and Light franchise renewal passed by 436 votes. ward results begin with First Ward.
Western Union College, three years old, outstrips Meyersburg Pennsylvania and Dallas Oregon in attendance and endowment. The rise is attributed to location, leadership under President Staadias, and Western hustle. The younger college moves from the rear to a leadership position among local denominal colleges.
The six year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Newton Jeffers was struck on the forehead by a stone thrown by a small boy on Monday at the high school grounds. She sustained a severe injury and Dr H Mam men was summoned to attend her.
Sioux City and LeMars are bustling with transacting business visits and social calls. Numerous residents including John Evans, Chas Hollenbeck, Jacob Rosen, Mrs. Schaap, Miss Alexander, Miss McDuffie, and many others travel to Sioux City, Remsen, Remsen, and Maurice for visits, medical needs, or to handle affairs, while several plan trips to Parker, Atchison, and South Dakota.
Mrs. E A Carpenter who sought relief from a cancer behind the left eye died at the W R Goudy home in Sioux City. The operation removed the eye to relieve pressure by doctors Powell Knott and Wichelberger. Death caused by meningitis from cancer, not the operation, followed a period of rallying. Her funeral will be held Thursday at 2 PM conducted by Rev LT W Macdonald at the First Methodist Church in LeMars. Her loss is deeply felt in the community.
Mrs John Sperling died Saturday night at ten o clock at the family home on Court Street after a six year fight with stomach trouble. Born in Mecklenburg Germany March 20 1823 she came to the U S in 1854 and married John Sperling in 1836. The funeral was held Tuesday at 2 o clock at the German M I church. She leaves her husband four children Mrs Bell Milwaukee Wis Mrs E Gralapp Akron Mrs Henry King and Chas Sperling Le Mars and a host of friends mourn her passing.
Rumor says Illinois Central and Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha railroads will upgrade LeMars stock yards with stone or cement floors to keep yards dry and allow stock to be held in all weather. Work to begin after spring opening, boosting shipping and attracting livestock that would otherwise go elsewhere. Improvements also benefit feeding houses.
