A disastrous blaze at Berson in Gironde destroys most of the village. Fourteen villagers die or perish while escaping. Rescue efforts focus on saving the elderly and children as others lose their lives or livelihoods. Surrounding towns assist survivors amid hunger and exposure.
A three story factory building on Maseher and Somerset streets burned at 10 am causing an estimated 250000 in losses. The blaze fell on about six firms.
Paris reports an urgent push to prosecute Rouvier Roche Aren and other deputies over Panama Canal affair as monarchists rally. The session featured heated exchanges with Clemenceau defending himself amid bribes and fraud allegations. Report from Blain Wyoming details a fatal clash in the Big Horn basin near Hyattville where Deputies Natcher and Miller were killed while attempting to arrest cattle thieves. In United States district court a jury found Patrick Finnegan guilty of smuggling potatoes from Canada into Maine. Sentencing deferred. Finnegan, a wealthy farmer near the Canadian border, owns a Maine-Nebraska style farm with most buildings in Maine and part of one barn in Canada. The case claims potatoes were bought in Canada and sold across the border without duties.
