Panzer Enlists in U.S. Marines for Four Years

John Panzer of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Iowa City, has joined the U.S. Marines for four years. He departs for California for about six weeks before heading to the Philippines. Friends in Cedar Rapids wish him success as he begins this service. Mr and Mrs Joseph Panzer left Muscatine after visiting James Panzer near Solon.

Trip to Wales Set for Next Sunday

Mr and Mrs William Hofeditz and their young daughter Maizie and Miss Anna Hughes with her brother Will of Union township prepare to travel east next Sunday. They will visit William and Anna Hughes' parents in Wales whom they have not seen in ten years. The Hofeditzes will ride as far as Ebensburg Pennsylvania to spend the winter at Mrs Hoteditz's parents home Mr and Mrs Griff Lloyd.

May Hear Fate Saturday for Three Criminals

It is not certain but possible that on Saturday Walter Alberbasky Charles Williams and James Morgan may be sentenced after verdicts were delivered. Alberbasky was found guilty and Williams and Morgan pleaded guilty. The Maher cage closes tonight allowing Judge Byington to proceed with sentences tomorrow.

Sanders Land To Be Bought For Park At $10 000

The city board of park commissioners adopted a resolution to buy eighty acres owned by Mrs M A T Sanders north of the city on the west bank of the river for 810000. The purchase hinges on securing money at a favorable rate likely below five percent. Introduced by Prof Macbride the measure passed with Commissioners Koontz and Korab voting yes. Work to improve the property will begin in spring with preparations for public use.

Shrapnel Shell Found Near Ft. Sill Oklahoma

A Simeon Graf reported finding a discharged shrapnel shell yesterday morning about two miles from Ft. Sill Oklahoma. The shell measured ten and three fourths inches long and three inches in diameter, weighed about eight pounds, and has a time adjustment for explosion.

Three More Voting Machines Approved for Three Cities

The board of supervisors voted to acquire three additional voting machines funded by the county. They will be placed in Oxford Solon and Lone Tree and used for city and town elections. City pays 1525 dollars and county 3575 dollars over ten years.

Consolidation of Farmers Insurance Firms Discussed

A Johnson county movement aims to merge six farmers mutual and rural insurance companies to cut expenses. Northwestern Mutual of North Liberty and Asian Farmers Mutual are considering a single company, with hopes others join. Savings from one secretary and larger risks could lower assessments per thousand dollars of risk.
