Fort Griewold Defended by Militia at Groton on the Thames

In September 178, Arnold led a force against Fort Griewold while Col. Ledyard and local militia defended the gate. Despite bravery from townsmen armed mainly with spears, British losses were heavy: 48 killed and 18 wounded, while 71 defenders died or were wounded. The action reflected Connecticut’s stubborn resistance near New London as Clinton’s expedition moved toward Yorktown.
