Business institute opens in Heppner August 1

Advertising salesmanship and merchandising problems of Mor row County merchants and business men are topics at the two day session of the annual business institute. Sponsored by the Oregon Retail Merchants Association and Oregon State College school of Commerce the program begins in the State Theater Heppner. Instructors include Prof H T Vance Prof K E Bosworth and O F Tate secretary of the merchants association. A banquet is scheduled Wednesday evening at 6 50 o clock.

Byrd Program at Willows Grange Stirs Local Attendees

The Willows Grange presentation titled The Byrd Program featured Velma Sharrard’s talk The Silent Lady and Ida Heliker’s paper Richard Byrd's Trip to the South Pole. Harvest Progress in Valley Wheat Fields

The second crop cutting is underway in the valley with several farmers finishing early. Karl Murray expects to complete next week and return to Walla Walla while others report yields from eighteen to twenty bushels per acre, including Louis Asrevin at twenty two and a half and Roy Lieuallen at twenty four bushels per acre.

Woodpile Fire Endangers Stacked Wood Near Home

John Louy nearly lost several cords of wood to a fire last week after burning off grass and soaking the soil. Fire reignited when smoke was seen seeping from the woodpile. it was extinguished with no damage. Sawdust in the ground was believed to have carried the remaining embers for days.

The North Zone Improvement Club met Friday afternoon at Mrs Victor Riemann home to discuss Sir Arthur Conan Doyle life and works. Mrs Omar Rietmann presented material on Doyle and Mrs Gorger spoke on his views on spiritualism. The group planned to study Jack London next meeting.
