CEO explains food stamp plan at county courthouse

Representatives of the Office of Economic Opportunity will explain the federal food stamp program Friday at 10 a m in the Allen County Courthouse assembly room. Allen County has not joined the program but SEKCAP officials have urged commissioners to adopt it. The plan offers bonus stamps to low income families, funded by a monthly income based scale. If adopted, the county would need one extra staffer and monthly outreach to Moran Lavonburg and Humboldt. The program operates in multiple counties and is open to the public.

Chamber Members to Tour New City Hall in Iola

Iola Chamber of Commerce members will tour the city hall tomorrow after a noon luncheon in the new facility’s community room. Vic Perkins and Jim Wilson will conduct the tour as Chief Everett Shepherd and Mayor Jack Hastings attend the luncheon. The move to the new building completed over the weekend after a Friday pause for moving. The site sits at Jackson and North streets just north of the Allen County Courthouse.

Warming trend in Kansas weather boosts forecast

A light frost touched north central and northeastern Kansas this morning as temperatures rise. Highs expected in the 70s in western Kansas and near 70 in the east with mid 40s at night. Savonburge Youth Injured In Chanute Area Crash

Kenneth Foster, 19, of Savonburg, was admitted to Neo Sho Memorial Hospital in Chanute after a one car accident eight miles east of Chanute on 39 Saturday evening. Police said Foster’s Ford Mustang passed a truck, accelerated, lost control, and overturned in a ditch. He remained in satisfactory condition.

Prerogative Falls To Finance Council In Budget Cuts

Topeka AP A final decision on across the board state agency budget cuts rests with the Republican dominated Finance Council rather than Gov. Docking. Assistant Atty. Gen. Richard Seaton said reductions would be used to shield state reserves in light of a $27 million school aid bill. The council would hear appeals within 20 days after requests. The council membership includes both Democrats and Republicans with Docking and Lt. Gov. DeCoursey as Democrats and four Republicans including Fribley and Van Sickle in leadership roles.

Nurses Aides Training Classes Start at County Hospital

Al len County Hospital will begin nurses aides training Monday May 5. Administrator Larry Patterson says enrollees will complete a 60 hour program combining on the job and classroom instruction and receive a certificate on completion. Interested applicants should contact Mrs. Marjorie Kramer for an interview by Thursday May 1. Another course is planned for early June.

Iola Housewife Writes Hawaiian Songs, Eyes Pro Career

Iola resident Mrs Wayne Frantz discovered a passion for composing Hawaiian tunes starting last October with Destination Hawaii. She writes when ideas come, often recording or transcribing on piano, and has five songs in copyright process. Her music has been performed by the Pua Almeida Orchestra in Waikiki and at a Kansas City studio, with encouragement from Tennessee Ernie Ford and family. The Frantzes live at 602 North Jefferson in Iola.
