Willard Flanders killed his wife and Sam Aultz near Red Canyon, then shot at Aultz before surrendering to officers. The incident followed a domestic quarrel and an injurious dispute that morning. Obituary for Samuel Aultz of Crook County
Funeral services for Samuel Aultz were conducted Saturday at the cemetery by the Spearfish Odd Fellows lodge. Born March 3, 1867 in Pennsylvania, he moved west young and married Francis Moore in 1891 at Grand Island Nebraska. He resided in Hulett four years after moving from Spearfish to homestead, once ran Sundance Hotel and engaged in local business. He died while a sheriff candidate in Crook County and is survived by his widow and a Gregory, South Dakota brother. The county mourns a trusted neighbor and friend.
