Arid land farming prospects in Manville area spark optimism
Henry Connors advocates macaroni wheat and sugar beets as profitable, drought tolerant crops. Trials show 25 bushels per acre for macaroni wheat, beets yielding over eight tons per acre on dry ground. Oats and alfalfa also perform well. sugar beets fed to hogs and cattle prove valuable. Potatoes yield 50-150 bushels and compare favorably with Nebraska’s potato belt. Sheep farming gains interest. Davin and Sherman report strong yields.
