Lady Godiva Ride In Gauze Pageant At Coventry
In Coventry a modern Lady Godiva rode a gauze clad figure on a white palfrey as a vaudeville group portrayed the legendary benefactress. The event drew about 100000 spectators, with clergy leaving town over nudity concerns and a costume inspector approving the look before the six mile procession. The tale recalls the eleventh century wife of Earl Leofric who defended Coventry from taxes by riding naked, a version of which features the Peeping Tom legend.
