Claver Attacks City Budget Plans in 1926 Debate
City council member and Democratic leader William E. Claver assailed the 1926 budget as flawed and reckless. He cited a $6,480,000 ten year track elevation obligation, a 6 cent levy yielding $3,900,000, and a half cent levy plus plan funds totaling $140,000. He warned the New York Street widening would cost nearly $1,000,000 with 75 percent from plan funds, projecting twenty years to complete at $80,000 yearly. He recalled 1913 staffing in Barrett law department and criticized department needs under Mayor Shank.
