An explosion at the Wilhelm coal mine in Aachen Germany entombed hundreds of miners. A private report claimed about 150 deaths though not confirmed by officials.
Firemen from Pumper Company 27 rescued a groggy parrot named Dickie from a 4 am kitchen blaze at 939 North Gray Street. Mrs. Hattie Morrill and her mother fled in night clothes as smoke damaged the home and a canary died while another bird was saved. Damages totaled $500.
Mrs. Mary Rosenthal a 53 year old woman admitted she staged a fake bank hold up to be arrested and jailed. She walked into the Union bank waved a vial and claimed it contained nitroglycerin demanding 3000 dollars. She said she roamed town seeking work before deciding to rob for confinement.
Former Governor Alfred E. Smith opens a speaking tour to boost Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt and denounce Republican policies and alleged false issues. He cites Tammany Hall graft as part of the GOP criticism.
Milford residents may get free haircuts as Theodore Skasko, an independent barber, drives a price war with five union shops. The dispute began when unions set 65 cents a haircut, Skasko priced at 50, then cut to 35 and 15 cents as unions matched the cuts. Union spokesman Paul Cambone of Danbury said they would offer free haircuts if needed to respond.
The Indianapolis Real Estate Board contest between the Hustlers and the Rustlers nears the million dollar threshold. By noon the Hustlers closed 23 deals totaling 593,572 dollars while the Rustlers logged 31 deals totaling 353,632 dollars. The combined total is 947,209 dollars and the contest ends Wednesday.

Loganport Indiana October 21 Joel Stamper pleaded guilty to the August 14 robbery of the Twelve Mile State Bank and was sentenced to fifteen years in the state reformatory.
Jack Dempsey former heavyweight champion elected president of Playa Ensenada hotel and casino in Ensenada Mexico. The board plans a large hotel and casino opening October 31 rivaling Agua Caliente and will operate a BP line from Los Angeles to Ensenada.

Civil war veteran Theodore J. Sherwood, 86, lamented a bath tub license fine after being fined $20 for installing a tub without a license. The court suspended the fine if he obtains the license, and Sherwood protested that paying for a bath is a doggone outrage.
P. O. Ferrer vice president of Real Silk Hosiery Mills told the Service Club that his firm has the largest volume of business in its history. He spoke at a Monday luncheon at the Indianapolis Athletic Club noting capacity production and full orders from all regions of the country.
In Tipton court Russell Had dath of Indianapolis pleaded guilty to reckless driving. He was sentenced to three months at the penal farm, fined 17.60 dollars, and had his driving license revoked. The farm term was suspended.
