Governor Harry G. Leslie approved eighteen paroles including Wendell C. Hessong who authored blackmail letters signed The Hawk. In 1928 Hessong demanded 3000 dollars from Carmel residents Hal C. Purdy Louis Ross and Bailey Hawkings with threats to blow up houses. He was captured in Akron Ohio and sentenced January 28 1929 to one to five years. He claimed he was a student aviator and wanted funds for a skywriting venture.
International Falls Oct 1 The Kooching county grand jury began examining evidence against Emmet J White a border patrolman charged with second degree murder in the June 8 death of Henry Virkula a Big Falls confectioner. White fired four or five riot gun shots after Virkula failed to stop for a liquor search. Prosecutor David Hurlbert said evidence will be fact based and not a wets versus drys debate. Virkula had earlier pleaded guilty to a liquor nuisance charge and was fined. The grand jury was not expected to indict White.
Mrs. Ella Hinsley of East Tenth Street reports September ended in chaos. Her son R C Hinsley was robbed of 3 dollars by a woman bandit while her other son William eight years old ran away. William returned with Mrs Hinsley after a camping-out episode in an old barn near their home. The other youth fled.
Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh and his wife toured Balboa Panama sight-seeing for hours. Canal Zone fishermen invited him to join sailfish fishing near the Pearl Islands as the sportiest angling in the area. He flew from France Field near Cristobal Monday and aimed to return there later today. He leaves October 8 for Managua Nicaragua en route to the United States.

Robert A. McPherson Jr., a bank clerk, is jailed on murder charges for the strangling of his wife Virginia McPherson in their apartment two weeks earlier. The grand jury urged removal of two city detectives for alleged inefficiency in handling the case. The coroner had ruled death by own action.
