Mauretania Captain Calls Rescue An Act Of God
Captain S. G. S. McNeil of the Cunard liner Mauretania saved twenty eight people from the sinking Ovidia and credited the lack of Atlantic fog for enabling the timely rescue. Captain Axtel Carlsson told his orderly account of staying with the stricken vessel while Endicott and the Mauretania joined the effort. A shipboard concert raised $600 for Carlsson and the Ovidia survivors including his wife and the twenty six others aboard.
