A sharp opening decline gave way to a broad rebound as small buyers across the United States and Europe flooded in. Steel led the rally, recovering all initial losses while other stocks climbed, aided by late rediscovered demand and margin adjustments.

Thomas Gavin a drunken taxi driver invaded the Illinois Athletic Club lobby Sunday waving an automatic shotgun. He counted three to force the safe opening when Edward Jensen the 64 year old elevator operator wounded him by firing twice striking Gavin in the hip and side. Thomas Kelly night clerk threatened by the gun escaped injury. Gavin was in critical condition.
A detonating device with a burning fuse was found by a Brussels policeman near the Italian chamber of commerce building. The officer cut the fuse and submerged the bomb in water at a nearby station.
