Ray Conwell, 40, of Muncie, is jailed in Newcastle Indiana after a mob accused him of attempting to attack Elaine Burch, 11, with Blountsville badly injured when Conwell’s car went into a ditch one mile south of Blountsville. Elaine is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clay Burch.
Five suspects linked to recent Marion bombing outrages were released when the grand jury did not return indictments. The group includes Harry Danford Peter Kmieciak and Joe Beckett of Chicago Duke Humphrey of Elwood and Mrs Irma Legos of Marion, after a session dating to April 30.
Dwight W. Morrow spoke in Newark urging repeal of the eighteenth amendment with a policy allowing states to set liquor rules and federal funds to curb importation. He argued prohibition is not a personal liberty issue and faulted the system where state cooperation varies, risking a hostile federal power and a lawless traffic.
Newark May 16 Representative Franklin Fort Republican announced his candidacy for the United States senate on a dry platform. He will oppose Ambassador Dwight Morrow Englewood and Joseph Frelinghuysen both running on anti prohibition platforms.
An improperly made out proxy led to the re-election of R. Earl Peters as state chairman over Lee Bays by 13 to 12 in the Democratic state committee ballot in Clay pool. Mrs Nora Short of Salem held the proxy. Other results: Mrs A P Flynn re-elected state vice-chairman with fourteen votes, Mrs Carl E Wood eight, Mrs Inez Scholl three. Marshall Williams re-elected secretary with thirteen votes, Harry Bodine eight, Orville Samps eight.
The Boston Terrier Club Inc hosts an annual show at the Denison hotel ballroom. Entrants include Prince Alert owned by L L Zimmerman Mt Vernon IL and Ponce owned by Mrs C A Barnhill East Fall Creek Blvd. Judge Alva Rosenberg of Brooklyn presides as entries from Kentucky and other places compete.
Indianapolis announces 1930 ward populations to reflect downtown expansion and outward migration. Ninth ward numbered 51 725 residents up from 38 264 in 1920 while Seventh ward grew to 14 913 and Eleventh to 13 821. Explanations cite Real Silk Hosiery and Sears Roebuck developments and street clearances driving shifts to outlying areas. Woodruff Place remains separate within city limits.
Funeral services were conducted in Anderson for Mrs Ella K Harris who died recently. The former local resident passed away in nearby city and was remembered by family and friends in a brief service.
Sally Marie Breedlove of Bloomington, 21, embraced the year old baby boy she deserted on a rain soaked roadside near Indianapolis weeks earlier. She cried sweetheart here’s your mamma as Bobby, found on Bluff road, smiled at deputy sheriff Ollie Mays. Breedlove remains in county jail on a $1000 bond for child neglect.
India's activist Joan of Arc figure Mrs Sarojini Naidu was bodily removed by police from the Dharasana salt works after a 28 hour siege while her followers clashed with police in a surprise raid. Nine demonstrators were injured and Mrs Kamaladevi Chatuphyaya, Naidu's sister in law, was arrested.
William Philips Simms reports from abroad on European reaction to the US tariff bill. Nations act in self defense against American duties, forecasting job losses and a coming commercial war. England bans non British goods, France protests worker demonstrations, and Europe plans retaliation impacting American profits and prosperity.
Senator Pat Harrison accuses Republican leaders of trying to bottle up and kill the tariff bill by keeping it from the White House. Smoot admits conferees shifted plans and Democrats were excluded from a conferee meeting. The bill likely will not be brought up again soon.
A report says amateur cracksmen forced entry to offices and knocked the safe combination off a steel safe. Police investigate the burglary as unknown intruders remove suspected documents and valuables from the premises. No injuries reported.
