City Girl Is Periled in School Fire at Springfield College
Marie Schneider of 1124 Pleasant Street was among several Wittenberg College co-eds who escaped a dormitory fire. Hilda Sipes of Shelby, Ohio died in the blaze after suffocating during the escape. Schneider reportedly jumped from a second story window, broke her nose, and was hospitalized with other injured girls. she later told her parents she was carried out by firefighters and that all her clothes were destroyed. She is a Manual Training High School graduate.

Entry was through a broken front door glass and the strongbox unlocked with shop tools. Detectives said no crew was found after a forty hour probe. Earlier in the Pettis Dry Goods store another safe was blown open and watchman was overpowered. About 10 000 dollars was missing, including 1800 postal substation funds.

Meridian Street paving opens after widening project
Meridian Street between Fall Creek and Thirty-Eighth Street reopened for traffic after widening and resurfacing. Marion County Construction Company finished the stretch to Thirty-Fourth Street Monday night at a cost of $156,000, in forty-two days, a potential new time record. The street widened from 36 to 54 feet and was surfaced with asphalt. City Engineer A H Moore said the section from St Clair to Tenth Streets would be done in ten days to ease race day congestion on May 30.
