Washington May 7 The administration's tariff bill aimed at aiding agriculture and struggling industries was introduced in the House by W C Hawley chairing the ways and means committee. It calls for higher duties on cotton worn silk fabrics sugar and various agricultural goods with few reductions mostly to assist agriculture. Representative John Garner Democratic floor leader attacked the secrecy of the bill writing but could not contest the bill itself. The sugar tariff rises to 3 cents per pound with Cuba’s 20 percent reduction, meat tariffs up for Argentine ships, hides remaining free and corn priced up ten cents per hundred pounds. Hawley defended these lifts as necessary for farm and industrial balance. The major increases target fabrics responding to New England and southern mills.
