Indiana Road Grant Declares Land Along Center Line State Property
Historic grant language asserts a 100 foot wide highway strip from Michigan City to Indianapolis and through Indianapolis, with title not transferable to private holders. The article notes many parcels within fifty feet of the center of the road encroach on state land and that the grant specifies use for a road without private ownership. The 1826 Potawatomi cession, to the United States, set the path for a state highway corridor from Lake Michigan to the Ohio River via Indianapolis.
