William McAdoo 76 emigrated from Ireland to the United States and became a national figure. He served in New Jersey municipal posts and the assembly, Congress, and as assistant secretary of the navy from 1893 to 1897. He later moved to New York, where Mayor McClelland appointed him police commissioner in 1904 and he rose to chief magistrate of New York's lower courts. He died of heart disease while nearing two decades in that role.
