Attorney General James M. Ogden cited a city described as freewheeling for bootlegging gambling and vice. He alleged police officials and a foreboding network tolerated crime while federal agents avoided the area. The Times confirmed Lafayette as the city in question.
Orla Mock, 60, known as a local police character and nicknamed jungle buzzard, sacrificed his life Thursday to shield youth Perry Paradin from a speeding train. Mock died in the attempt, Paradin suffered a fractured skull and a broken leg.
Indiana may host the Governor conference in Indianapolis in 1932. Governor Harry G. Leslie said a backer's support could secure the event. The convention city will be chosen at a fall meeting of officers and the executive committee. Leslie, back from Salt Lake City, will attend and was elected treasurer. He plans redecorating of the governor’s executive office in Italian Renaissance style at an estimated cost not exceeding 11 000 dollars per Frank Caylor.
Phillip Hanley and Richard Arnett pursued an alleged car thief through alleys and streets before capturing Milan Jackson after he fled Arnett's vehicle near a downtown hotel. The suspect, charged with vehicle taking, was caught following a brief pursuit ending at Alleghany and Senate.
The C. M. T. C. cadet corps at Ft Ben Harrison will move out for an eight mile overnight hike to the rifle range as part of annual maneuvers. President Hoover refused to submit secret documents for the London naval treaty as Senate debates morning session. He listed three main objections including the safeguard clause and Japanese ratio, noting Britain’s upper limits and potential French pressure.

The order adds charges for beach access and authorizes three marshals to enforce it amid questions about enforcement. Also continued in municipal court are impersonation charges between Marshals Magill and Solar.

Harold J. Szwiech also Harold Check, 27, of 931 Massachusetts Ave, died in city hospital Wednesday from auto crash injuries. His mother said he was moved to a private ward before death, countering a Times report that he died in the detention ward.
