On its tenth anniversary President Hoover promotes a broader enforcement program amid debate over effectiveness. Treasury figures list 250 deaths and costs of 264 million dollars. prohibition manpower has grown from 2,000 to 4,664 employees.
In Minneapolis on January 16 authorities sought two bootlegging rivals after a World War veteran who sold liquor to support his wife and 3 year old daughter killed Charles Getchell during a feud over invaded territory.
Portland observed the tenth anniversary of national prohibition with a brief bell ringing at noon. Earlier plans for whistles and celebrations were canceled after protests from business leaders professionals and clergy. Some urged mourning in sackcloth and ashes stating this is no time to crow.
Secretary Mellon argues for a single border patrol for land and sea while Prohibition Commissioner Doran warns against appropriating more than 15 million dollars due to court congestion. Two earthquake shocks rattled southern California causing stock losses and service interruptions. The 24 story Los Angeles city hall swayed and clocks paused at the weather bureau observatory. The tremors prompted theater patrons to flee and crowds to spill into the streets.
Eleven employees of the board of public health were ousted at a special meeting in the office of Dr. Herman G. Morgan. Dr. Morgan remained secretary and Dr. William A. Doeppers was named city hospital superintendent. New appointees include James Shea as chief inspector and vital statistician and Antoinette R. Frisz as assistant vital statistician. The changes, effective February 1, were made on Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan’s recommendation and approved unanimously. Most displaced were Republicans.
The body of an unidentified man was recovered from rubbish at a canal rubbish gate near Camp Sullivan on West Street. The body had been in water for weeks and police could not determine a cause of death. Detectives ruled out Otis F. Calvin, 60, president of the Indianapolis Sand and Gravel Company, who had been missing since December 13.
Senator Heflin says he will ask the senate cotton price investigating committee to summon Henry Ford over charges that Ford and other large buyers practice remorseless buying. Arthur R. Marsh testified that remorseless buying contributed to low cotton prices.
Kenneth Hite and Lewis Hoover, both 20 from Kokomo Indiana, are charged with automobile theft and interstate transport of stolen vehicles. Deputized U S marshal D B Calhoun delivered them to federal officers in Jefferson City after they were captured by Boonsville police.
The Senate rejected a 25 percent increase in the sugar tariff raising from 1.76 to 2.20 cents a pound. The Harrison amendment, arguing a $54 million yearly burden on consumers, passed 48 to 38, blocking the higher rate though House action had favored 2.40 cents. The fight continues as talks with the House await final tariff passage.
Mrs. Jule M. Powell testifies that husband William H. Powell insulted her as a child and a mental inferior while earning about 100000 dollars a year. The divorce action cites the Philo Vance deduction persona as a factor in the marriage breakup.

The American delegation may back extending battleship life to five more years and resist reducing tonnage from 35 000 to 25 000. Schroeder confessed to being the Irene Schroeder wanted in Pennsylvania with Dague and her brother J W Crawford on a murder charge. Authorities said there is no doubt she is Mrs Schroeder and Pennsylvania officers are en route to identify her. Dague was fully identified by fingerprints and Ackerman alias Wells is suspected in a bank robbery and a policeman killing in Coleman Texas on Jan 9.
In Las Vegas New Mexico on January 16 investigators reported Maury Graham an air mail pilot missing since last Saturday. Harsh weather and a blinding snowstorm are cited as the likely cause of the crash and the search was halted as conditions prevented further air attempts.

Burglars pried a door at West Baking Company at 40 South Oriental Street Wednesday night and stole carpenter tools valued at 200 dollars. The tools belonged to Oscar Ploeger of 2105 South East Street and Walter Brooks of 425 Tacoma Avenue.
Heber Nations former state labor commissioner was sentenced to eighteen months in the penitentiary and fined 2000 for violation of the national prohibition law today. Nations was found guilty by a federal court jury yesterday. The trial was Nations third. in each instance he had been found guilty.

White River fell another one and a half feet since Wednesday as city crews monitor for a levee break. Engineers say no rupture is expected and teams can seal any gap. A cold wave with zero temps arrives today aiding river containment, with some levees near Warfield possibly freezing to form barriers. Eugene Clothier sixteen was suspended from Corinth High School after a jug of wine was found in his possession. He was later found dead at home with a bullet wound. a .22 rifle lay beside the body. Coroner ruled death self-inflicted. Principal A Beckman said Clothier and another boy drank wine at school.
