Smelt Run Deluges Lewis River For Food Trade
In OATLAND Oregon on February 17 the smelt run surged up the Lewis River as millions of fish spawned upstream. Fishermen filled buckets and seins to harvest them for food while tons were shipped to Portland and box cars sent to a dozen states. The sea loving fish return to fresh water each spring seeking spawning grounds though some streams are skipped like the Cowlitz due to local mills. By year end they head toward the Sandy near Portland.

New Trial Sought for D. C. Stephenson in 1925 Murder Case
A writ of error coram nobis to obtain a new trial for D. C. Stephenson, ex Indiana Klan leader, is being prepared by Olin R. Olt of Kokomo. The filing targets Judge Will M. Sparks in Rushville, asserting duress and threats limited Stephenson from testifying and claiming trial error in not allowing him to take the stand. The Ottawa Newfoundland district jury deliberating Harry A. Hill, a 21 year old former Knox College student charged with murdering his mother, was dismissed after nearly sixty hours of deliberation when jurors reported they were deadlocked and a verdict seemed impossible. Power Lobby Probe Pushed in Senate Fight
The Senate independent group met to draft a resolution for an investigation of the so called power lobby which it says killed the Walsh resolution. Two Killed in City Accidents
A railroad switchman Henry Payne about 50 was found dead in the Monon Railroad yards near Twenty-Second Street at 10 30 am. He is believed to have been knocked from the Belt railroad train when his head struck an iron pole. Clinton Brewer 27 of 264 Laverock Road died after a truck he drove collided with an auto at Twenty First Street and Olney Avenue. Brewer, born in Martinsville, died at Indiana Christian Hospital from a fractured skull and internal injuries. He left a widow two sons aged four and two his mother and a brother and three sisters. His death follows a recent family bereavement. Crump faced assault and battery charges.
