Woman Invented the Collar in 19th Century Troy
It is authenticated that Mrs. Hannah Lord Montague invented the detachable linen collar. Born December 14, 1794 in Canaan, she lived with Orlando Montague at 139 Third Street, Troy. Her idea arose from household needs, leading to a collar that could be washed and ironed separately. In 1829 Reverend Ebenezer Brown opened a workshop behind his River Street store where collars were cut stitched and sold, effectively the first collar shop.
