John K. McClendon aged 26 and Miss Ella G. Burke of Americus were killed when their speeding car ran over an embankment toppled and caught fire.
Margaret I. Anderson was fined for contempt of court by Pro bate Judge Frank B. Ross after failing to attend her second divorce trial. She was arrested, jailed to pay a fine and costs, and an attachment was issued when served. The couple, married in 1877 with six children, faced renewed allegations of misconduct by Teeters and ongoing disputes.
John Daiker, who deserted his children Eva and Richard Daiker, sought a suspended sentence in criminal court on Friday. Judge Pritchard denied the request, upholding the child desertion statute as punitive and ordering Daiker to serve one to three years in the state prison. He noted a year-long desertion with no extenuating facts and rejected mercy as a safe precedent. Daiker was described as 83 years old.
The grand jury released final findings Friday with 20 indictments and 15 discharges while no murder cases were returned. Several defendants were freed for lack of proof including Albert Cook, Claude Clay, Roland Laing, Charles Staley, and others.
Adolph Dreher is held after police investigate a safe theft at Anthony Bauman's bakery on 2033 South Meridian Street. About $15 was missing from an unlocked closet safe with the key in an apron pocket. Dreher, seen near the bakery, claims he was there to get a newspaper and notes he needs funds to return to Germany. Detectives Simon and Coffin arrested him.
Lula Brennen alleges Thomas Brennen deserted her in 1907 after two years of marriage and now is an inmate at the Indiana reformatory in Jeffersonville. Ada Facker seeks custody of her child Chester Facker and accuses husband Charles A. Facker of abusive language. The couple married at Queensville, Indiana in 1834 and separated September 7 this year.
Dr Frederick A Cook the Arctic explorer to receive full honors as discoverer of the north pole after the Hudson Fulton celebration. At a Waldorf banquet he urged unity among explorers, pledged complete records within months, and announced lectures in major cities with a Carnegie Hall event to begin next Monday.
Judges push to curb delays with new rules in Marion county criminal court. Rule One requires written jury waivers two days before trial if defendants do not opt for jury. Rule Two requires two day notices for venue changes except in death penalty cases. Rule Three doubles peremptory challenges for jurors before final selection.
Bluffton Indiana piano mover J M O Connor faced Acting Judge Wilkinson in police court after a night of trouble on Indiana avenue. He offered to pay 50 dollars plus costs for resisting an officer and 39 days in the workhouse plus 15 dollars for drunkenness. Detectives Duncan and Ulery intervened, leading to a scuffle in which Duncan’s punch damaged his fist and required bandaging.
Rev. Anthony Scheidler of St. Mary’s church on E Maryland street awakened Friday at 2 am by a commotion in the chicken yard behind his residence. Eight large chickens lay dead with throats cut, several more injured. officers suspect a weasel attack, though no trace was found. The birds were to be used at a Catholic Verein convention feast.
The Fisher Automobile Company filed suit Friday against Henry F. Habeny seeking $1,106.87 for storage repairs and supplies on Habeny's car. The complaint asks that the auto be sold to satisfy the lien, with a demand noted of $1,200.
New Orleans reports a rescue party at Port Eads found wreckage of the steamship Utstein chartered by J. B. Cefalu. The vessel bound for Puerto Cortez and New Orleans with bananas reportedly sank in the Yucatan channel on Monday, with about 40 people missing.
Robert Hill a two year old faced criminal court after attempting to pin theft of a $12 bicycle on his mother. He received six months workhouse and $1 fine plus costs. The case centered on a bicycle used in his package delivery work and not returned. Hill claimed the mother received the bike for return, then altered the story when questioned about her location. He gave inconsistent claims about soldiers homes and Marion Indiana.
The farm residence of Lewis Van Briggie a Prairie township farmer and tile maker was partly demolished by dynamite near midnight. The couple escaped unharmed though the room walls were blown out and nearby homes damaged. Investigators traced a 25 foot fuse to the hidden device as bloodhounds pursued the trail to a gravel road before losing it.
Bessie M. Goodwin seeks divorce claiming coercion and brutal treatment by husband John A. Goodwin. She says four days after the wedding he forced her to leave the bridal cottage, caused weeks of illness, and forced her into the street after she refused further demands.
Spanish forces hold an entrenched line from the sea to the foothills of Mt Gurugu to block Moorish advance and have seized Namor southward. This sets the stage for a broader maneuver to outflank the Moors on Mt Gurugu.
Amer I. Keppel files for divorce from Amazine Keppel saying they wed in 1902 and separated in May 1909 after she beat him wounded him and constantly abused him and accused him of wrong doing.
Otto Truhan who set fire to the McDougall factory was bound over to the grand jury on arson charges after detectives Coffin and Simon testified. He confessed to the police, said he was overworked, and faced possible recommitment to an insane asylum instead of prison. Detective Simon earned praise for aiding the capture.
John H. Wheeler was sent to the workhouse for 9 days and fined 100 dollars plus costs on a child desertion charge after leaving his wife and child in this city while he resided with another woman in Terre Haute. The father arranged for Wheeler to appear in court and receive deemed punishment for his misdeeds.
The body of Lieut Gen Henry C Corbin lay in a vault at Arlington National Cemetery since September 10 and was buried this morning. Brief services were held by Chaplain W W Bradnor of the First Cavalry. the ceremony was private.
