The crash also threw Mrs. Josephine Kleber and granddaughter Helen Kleber, while the motorman claims he managed brakes and did not see the moment of impact. Capt. Preliminary hearing on arson case involving Albert Newhouse
Squire Nickerson presided Monday over the preliminary hearing of Albert Newhouse charged with arson. Newhouse, son-in-law of Valentine Apple of Lawrence township, allegedly set fire to Apples barn. Witnesses suggested a motive tied to family estrangement and threats. Earlier, the barn fire left tracks resembling Newhouse’s footwear nearby.

Paroled prisoner Battich Dies of Tuberculosis
Wm. Battich colored, recently paroled from the state prison as a consumptive, died at City hospital Saturday night and was buried at Mount Jackson Sunday afternoon. He lived at 21 Alleghanyst. A widow survives him. Battich was sent to prison for theft and died from pulmonary tuberculosis after being received at the hospital in late July.

Mortgage Filed To Secure 400 Bonds For Stevenson Block
The Stevenson building company filed a mortgage with the county recorder on Monday morning to Aquila Q. Jones as trustee for $400,000. The loan guarantees payment of 400 bonds of $1,000 each due in five years and will be used to retire indebtedness from constructing the Stevenson block.

Death of A Newland robs Indiana blind institute of its pillar
Robert A Newland noted for music teaching at the Indiana Institute for the Blind died unexpectedly at his home in Indianapolis aged about 74. He became a famed organist and composer linking to Second Presbyterian and Tabernacle churches. A lifelong public figure with a storied early life, he supported the institute for seventy years and left a family of survivors. Funeral held Monday at 3 pm from his residence with private burial at Crown Hill.

Mrs. Asenath Hoyt 87, born 1810 in Vermont, died at 1414 Ash Street Sunday after 11 pm. A niece of William Whipple signer of the Declaration of Independence, her family included abolitionist ties and Underground Railroad activity in Indiana. Buried in Jefferson County beside her husband Lyman, she authored religious poems and essays and belonged to College Ave Baptist Church.
