In Brightwood Monday night telegraph operator Charles Pfeiffer butchered his wife Jennie and their infant Willie, then hanged himself. Coroner Castor cites temporary insanity as the motive after discovering the scene and timing. Neighbors and relatives describe the couple as industrious and devoted.
In St Louis on September 1 0 and 11 a meeting of People's Party leaders discussed the demand to withdraw vice presidential candidate Sewall from the Democratic ticket. If refused the ticket could lose support as Breckinridge and others weigh withdrawal implications. The conference was a surprise to Missouri committee chair Roselle.
Deputy Foley escorts Francis Coffin from Michigan City to the northern penitentiary. Coffin, calm and defiant, bids farewell to his wife and maintains protest over his arrest. On the train his demeanor impresses officials, as Coffin discusses politics and endures the journey with quiet dignity.
In a police court ruling on Tuesday Judge Cox held that a driver who knowingly ignores traffic laws by traveling on the wrong side of the street may not be guilty of intentional assault if an accident occurs. Fred Morley, employed at Indiana Bicycle Works, was injured when Teern Merrill’s bogey struck Morley’s mount on Massachusetts Ave. Morley was taken to City Hospital with uncertain prognosis before Merrill was fined $1 and costs after a trial concluding with a guilty finding.
Deputy prosecutor weighs whether a parrot can testify in court as a witness. Mrs. Irwin alleges Mose Powell stole a revolver she traded for another weapon, citing the parrot’s claim and the bird’s remark that Mose was in her bedroom. Mose denies the accusation.

An affidavit sworn Monday before Bauile Lockman charges Thos. EB. Henley with embezzlement in a case involving a phony phosphate land deal. Henley claimed rich beds in Virginia and misrepresented value, selling stock to J. N. Fluston and others before the scheme collapsed. The land proved nearly worthless, and Henley vanished after striking a $2,000 price for land he bought for $1.00.
A large display at H. P. Wasson & Co. on Washington street featured autumn styles in dress goods cloaks and millinery. Hart's orchestra provided afternoon music as hundreds toured the elegant arrangements. The store reported many new original designs and a very successful opening.
Thos Winn of 2 Chadwick Street accidentally discharged a 22 caliber revolver at about 11 31 Monday night striking his left eye. Doctors fear brain injury as the ball is unrecovered. Winn’s condition stabilized though still critical Tuesday morning.
