A mine fire at Bell Ellen in Bibb county near Birmingham traps five men in one room. About 100 workers were in No 2 mine of Bessemer land and improvement, with rescue efforts underway as women and children gather at the mouth. Fire source and total entombed remain unclear.
George Bancroft, a railroader, is sent to the errand jury from police court on a highway robbery charge. John Fogarty, an oil soldier, came to attend a regiment reunion, got drunk, and cannot recall events. Barcroft allegedly robbed Fogarty and pocketed $15. Several local notices follow, including deaths, weddings, breaches, and minor injuries.
John D. Hacker of Columbus, Ohio, says his betrothed, Mrs. Blendie Foote, decamped with an expensive wedding trousseau after Chicago trip to wed. He sought a warrant for her but could not press charges. Hacker, an embosser, sent money for the trousseau and has not seen her since. Foote, previously married, had two children and may have duped him for months. A reporter found Hacker’s boardinghouse landlady received a late telegram urging his return.
The Prohis plan a Tuesday evening rally at the corner of Fort Wayne Avenue and Pennsylvania Street opposite Sieh School to attack the saloon. Floe MeoWhirter will speak on liquor from a financial view, arguing liquor money should fund streets parks and homes rather than government taxes and foreign capital.

Gov Mount and staff hesitate to travel to Nashville next month due to yellow fever risk in the south. Dr Ranfields and Col Megrew lead a planning committee until Nashville health officials are consulted. No definite action on the excursion will occur yet. A wrecked Fall Creek bridge near Millersville Pike, broken by Thursday's storm, will be inspected by county commissioners this week to decide on repairs. The bridge spans 100 feet.
Brakeman J J Marshall of Louisville died in a Louisville division freight wreck early Sunday after the train, five hours late, collided at a rear-end crash south of Southport. He was 81, single, and crushed under the rear cars. The accident destroyed several thousand dollars of property and tore apart twelve coal cars.
A Sept 19 1897 letter to the editor complains that high school pupils who attend both morning and afternoon sessions bring home lesson lists that spoil the afternoon at the fair. The writer notes many pupils attend only part of each day, making fair attendance impossible and risking unlearned lessons.

Treasurer Ke J Robison closes on a total income of about 40600 from gate grand stand entries and fees with 28766.50 receipts, 1964.10 on Friday, and 4932.57 from entries. Secretary Kennedy and J W Agnew defend rules while public indignation grows over alleged mismanagement on Friday.
Two Valparaiso men Heinrich Augustus Brown and Theodore J Hansen are jailed in Marion County after a hearing in Lapierre. They face investigation on a crucial case with U S treasury agents Carter and Porter involved. Brown is an alleged anarchist and photographer with forged notes. Hansen printed at his father’s home near Valparaiso.
County commissioners plan two 250 barrel cisterns for the new Boar of children's guardians home on East Washington Street. Water will be raised into a 60 barrel tank, with soft water for washing and hose connections for fire use. Cisterns cost about 900 dollars.
Prominent republicans address colored voters at the Yellow Bridge Monday evening while colored republicans meet in Masonic hall. Allison Sweeney presides and the event includes honored vice presidents from the colored race. Meeting supports Taggart.
