A solemn citywide observance in Indianapolis marked the burial of a renowned statesman. Streets, transit, and many businesses paused for hours as crowds gathered at the monument, with church choirs and ministers delivering somber addresses on faith, patriotism, and national unity.
Canton Ohio September 13 thousands mourned as President McKinley lay in a temporary vault at Westlawn cemetery after services at the first M E church. Roosevelt cabinet and dignitaries led a long cortege through archways, flowers and black drapes as the body awaited a permanent mausoleum.
The Sovereign Grand Lodge session in the Hall of Representatives memorializes William McKinley and pledges to suppress anarchists. Grandsire Cable leads a rising vote as members recite the Lord's Prayer, while senators from Colorado, Alabama, Maine, Virginia and others offer tributes to the late president. Canton Ohio September 19 President Roosevelt informed Mrs McKinley that medical inspector P M Rixey will be appointed surgeon general of the navy after Surgeon General Van Ruypen's term ends. He will remain in Mrs McKinley's care until the appointment.
William Huddlestone a Chicago preacher famed as a reformed priest with Brushingham recommendations got so drunk on Wednesday night he could not walk and was locked at police headquarters. Judge Daly held judgment Thursday and Huddlestone planned to leave the city as Turnkey Taffe described him as drunk unable to lie in a ten‑acre field without grass.
Assistant secretary Taylor of the treasury department hopes for a definite rule to identify anarchists. He argues a reliable standard would prevent entry of anarchists and allow banishment of those already inside the United States.
Rev. Albert Dahlquist, in St Paul Minnesota, reportedly told a mob of about 1000 persons on a Wednesday night that the assassination of President McKinley was a noble deed. The claim sparked shock and concern over his remarks and the crowd's reaction.
Fire bells at headquarters tolled for the dead president in Canton at 1:30 PM Thursday during the funeral. Sixty taps were given and the toll continued for about half an hour.
