Sequoyah the Mighty Cherokee Alphabet Designer
Special to the Sand Muscogee. I T Sept Sequoyah may become a state symbol if Indian Territory joins. He created the Cherokee syllabary of 85 characters, enabling rapid reading under the most phonetic system. Born in 1763 in Wills Valley Georgia, he was a silver smith who taught himself letters and formed the alphabet in 1810. He aided Cherokee missions to Washington, earned a past reward, and a park was named in Yosemite in his honor. The Cherokees granted him a pension and he lived near Fort Gibson at one time. A monument in Tahlequah was proposed in his honor.
