The Twenty-seventh Indiana light battery, known as Battery A, returns home bearing the honor of service in Porto Rico. Brushed by sun and wind, the bronzed veterans are celebrated as Indianapolis’s pets, greeted with pride and affection by the city.
Soldiers of Battery A, Twenty-seventh Indiana, arrive at Union Station at 2 PM amid cheers. They sport sun-kissed looks, cut beard returns, and display curious trophies from Puerto Rico, including Mauser shells, native slippers, and shell-battered canes. Edward Hawkins designs a purple badge honoring their Porto Rico service.
Soldiers of the 18th Indiana finish a 30 day furlough after dawn roll calls at the regiment camp. Col Harry B. Smith presides as Adjutant Powell reads orders for leave to Oct 17. Trains prepared to transport men home. many stay to save pay. The 159th and 158th units also furloughed with speeches and thanks to volunteers. Camp Mount duties assigned. 63 men remain in hospital, one court martial related to Camp Alger. Signal corps return from Louisville. balloonist Prof. J. E. Baldwin remaining in service after recovery.
Ka K Thayer, about 25, returning Battery A correspondent, has kept many informed on artillerymen since leaving Indianapolis. Former Sun employee, he studied law at Indiana Law School and is now with Holtzman and Leathers. An all around athlete, he is praised for muscular development despite small stature.
State fair receipts totaled 25000 while rain and poor management threaten a deficit of 5000 to 10000 and the legislature may need to cover the gap. The Manila battle cost 4000 with 500 paid by the street car company. A 5 percent entry fee for race men will be refunded. McDonald of the Board of Agriculture may resign over newspaper passes. Secretary Kennedy ordered no passes after 6 pm. The Manila event disappointed as smoke obscured fireworks but Gov Mount Dewey and Clarke Matthews attended. the street car company managed the crowds well.
James Prier, about 28, was found dead in the street near Minnesota and Meridian streets around 6:30 Saturday morning. Police report hemorrhages as the cause. he lived on a house boat in the river bottoms and had been seen about 6:00 with a tin bucket. Coroner Brayton notes a year-long tuberculosis history and suspects a sudden acute attack led to death. The body was taken to Kingrego's morgue for examination.
Signor Perugini files for divorce in Jersey City claiming desertion and Mrs Russell's poker habit as the cause. He alleges she stayed up till seven playing cards with the company after performances. Digby Bell aided efforts at reconciliation. Russell has filed a cross bill alleging cruelty. hearing adjourned to next week.
Corporal Seber was court martialed after refusing to drill when sick. He was acquitted, but the captain allegedly delayed announcing the decision until Seber pressed for it. Soldiers report their accounts are settled and ready for furlough. The corps has been in camp at Jacksonville, Florida.
Police shift to a new theory in the Wilharm case and vow a suspect will be jailed soon. Coroner reports two bullets, one found in the kitchen baseboard, suggesting killer on a stairway or above the victim. Family doors locked, a 14 year old brother heard two shots but not the stair noise, funeral set for Sunday at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. services at Zion church. Burial at Crown Hill.
A traveling troupe led by Professor Wormwood will perform daily from September 19 at Illinois and Pratt streets. About 125 trained animals including a dog monkey pony bear cat goat peccary raccoon and anteater will entertain with afternoon and evening shows. A daily parade runs from 9 to 10 a.m. and attendants offer children pony rides and carriage trips after each performance.
Hebrews in Indianapolis observed the Jewish New Year on Saturday as Rosh Hashanah 5639. Orthodox businesses closed for the day and special services were held at Jewish temples.
George H. J. Smythe was discharged Saturday on charges of maintaining criminal relations with another woman. He had been arrested on a bigamy claim by a woman asserting she was his wife, and was found not guilty on that count.

Burgan a blacksmith of Delaware and Chiosts Saturday noon and may die Burgan arrested for assault with intent to kill Carter wagon had stood in Burgan's shop for days Carter went in to ask about finished work and a quarrel followed Burgan claims Carter picked up tongs first Carter lives at Illinois and Thirty eighth streets Burgan had previously knocked out two constables trying to serve papers
Brigadier general Joseph T. Haskell died at the Columbus barracks after a long service and wounds from El Caney. He collapsed while speaking with Capt. Clay as the regimental return arrived. Doctors attributed death to apoplexy following a day of excitement. Mrs. Haskell and their two sons were summoned.
Flora M. Bowen accuses E. R. Hodges company of fraud in blotting pads and novelty work. Bowen says she invested 1000 dollars then 1700 more and that Hodges altered co partnership papers to give her only a 1000 interest. She alleges threats and misrepresentation to seize books and threaten to quit business without compensation. Indiana and Capital National banks named as defendants due to deposits.
Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity calls for cloudy and partly cloudy skies through Saturday night and Sunday. Early Saturday temperatures ranged from 65 at 7 am to 72 at noon and 2 pm, with conditions remaining unsettled.
The funeral of Mrs. Effie Cordell Koehne for whom the text notes death by self destruction was held Saturday morning at Crown Hill. Rev. Wheeler of the Rescue mission conducted the private service attended only by her mother, brother, two sisters, and husband George Koehne along with a few friends. Although reports suggested Koehne remained away from his Normandie hotel, he reportedly attended the ceremony and appeared deeply affected.
The annual guest day will be held in the parlors next Friday from 3 to 6 p m. Sections in charge of decorations music and refreshments are busy perfecting arrangements for what promises to be a brilliant reception.
Soldiers from the 159th Company W Miller and Joe Young, sent to the work house by Judge Cox for stealing pool balls, were released Friday night on the judge’s order. A sergeant escorted them back to Camp Mount.
Alice Wallace sues Gil bert Wallace for divorce alleging cruelty. Mrs Wallace testified he dragged her from a sick bed by the feet causing a premature birth the following day.
Bridgeport police pursue leads in the dismembered body found in Yellow Mill Pond. Marian Grace Perkins of Middleboro is identified. Charles Bourne, named as her lover seen with her at Onset, has vanished but friends expect explanations. Canadian police warned as speculation grows on motive and whereabouts.
Grace Perkins of Middleboro disappeared after staying a week at Mrs. Snow’s, with Bourne a constant visitor during that period. Her body was found near Bridgeport, Conn. Investigators say she sought a friend’s aid in trouble and died under suspicious circumstances likely near the disposal site. police pursue the crime’s scene and motives.
In Middleboro Massachusetts on September 17 the fate of Charles Bourne Grace Perkins lover remains unknown. His brother George Bourne from Boston met a lawyer D D Sullivan and then took a Cape Cod bound train. Bourne is believed hiding with relatives and supporters expect his return to face accusations.
James Griffin twenty died after being struck by a Big Four train between Carter's Switch and Clermont Friday night. He was brought to City hospital by train with severe injuries including loss of a leg and a crushed hip. Griffin, living with his sister in Clermont, will be buried by his brother-in-law who arrived from Clermont Saturday morning. His mother resides in Kentucky.
