Frightful gun battle at Lattimer near Hazleton leaves eleven miners dead and many wounded after deputies fire on marchers who ignored a dispersal order. Sheriff Martin faces public anger while some defend the use of force as necessary to quell disorder.
After a deadly Friday encounter near Hazleton, wounded were treated by physicians arriving by trolley. Relatives and residents rushed to the scene as news spread, with reports of dead in the woods. Gov. Harrisburg sent troops Saturday morning, provoking mixed hopes for order and fears of renewed violence.
