Historical review shows Prof Benton and city officials clashing on water safety. Ferguson says potable today but warns future contamination possible as river supply persists. Board of Health seeks full river shutoff, citing past samples and 1892 reports by Benton and Renton.
In July 1894 Morea O Neill 12 died after her sister Margaret bought chlorate of potash tablets from Lee T Nash drugstore on Illinois street and gave them to the child. Mrs O Neill sued for 10600 damages. Jury in Judge Partholomews court returned a verdict for one dollar.
A coroner and doctors examined Lizzie Boeglin's remains in Magdalene Ripley County after her death in Indianapolis on August 13. They say evidence suggests poisoning, but Coroner Castor still believes death may be from natural causes. Her parents deny the claims.
Alfus Ferran testified about Mrs Shortridge and Mack allegedly displaying improper conduct at her farm south of the city during 1894. He said Will Shortridge rarely refused work and that the family and Mack clashed over authority. The case centers on cruelty allegations with about $14 at stake and proceedings linger into days.
Chairman W. D. Bynum of the national committee travels to Louisville to attend the Gen. Palmer and Gen. Buckner notification event with his daughter. The visit fuels speculation of a major surprise, while President Cleveland’s stance remains undisclosed. John R. Wilson also spoke in Peru Friday night.
Clay Maloy of 28 Ashland Street West Indianapolis, a yard conductor, was injured Friday before dawn at Panhandle yards. While riding in an engine cab he stepped down thinking ground was near, but plunged six to seven feet. He struck the back of his head, suffering a deep scalp wound and possible skull injury.

John Daly the Irish dynamiter, freed from Portland prison August 20 after a Paris visit plans to go to Limerick. He describes Portland as brutal especially toward Irish prisoners and says Gallagher and Whitehead were insane. Daly recalls near death from treatment and says emissaries offered testimony in exchange for release hints. He remains confident in the Irish cause's ultimate triumph.
Ambrose Hodges of near the Brookville pike crossing was killed Thursday when his bogey ard was struck by a fast freight train as he tried to avoid it. He died instantly with head injuries. An inquest was held at his near home shortly after the incident.
Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity for the 36 hours ending Friday afternoon calls for increasing cloudiness and cooler temperatures. Friday at noon reached 86 degrees while early Saturday showed a fall in temperatures as autumn conditions set in.
Over 4 percent sound money democrats met at the Bates house club room on Thursday to arrange a trip to the Palmer and Buckner notification in Louisville. Walter Kessler was chosen chairman with Louis Howland as secretary, and a 260 member delegation is expected to travel by 1 p.m. Saturday headed by a band from the Denison house.
After a day of delays and refusals the Indiana Democratic State Committee selected Parks Martin of Spencer County as chair. Thomas Taggart repeatedly declined the post citing health and business burdens, while fellow members pressed for a chairman and set the campaign leadership in motion with Martin’s unanimous appointment. Gov. Matthews, Thos Taggart, A W Clark and J E Lamb joined the new campaign committee.
Covington Sept 11 Scott Jackson and Alonzo Walling slayers of Pearl Bryan remain uncooperative with Jailer Joe Weig haus as authorities seek the whereabouts of two steel saws. Jackson appeals for newspapers but mail rules bar delivery. Walling claims the saws were hidden in a sink and fears involvement of a jailed acquaintance.
At the state fair grounds workmen rush to ready buildings for exhibits. Livestock exhibitors from hogs to horses arrive in large numbers. Secretary Kennedy moves offices to the fair administration building and plans next week’s events with Morgan and Wright racing teams. Bicycle displays feature riders and a sextuplette team aiming to lower the world mark with added purses boosting enthusiasm. Kennedy to announce full speed entry list Saturday.

Thomas E. Ross, 24, partially blind, died after being struck by a Four train in North Indianapolis. Ross claimed a robber knocked him senseless and placed him on the tracks, but coroner and police found little foundation for the murder theory as his incoherent statements and lack of valuables suggested a tragic accident. He had been itinerant street performer with brother Billie, a blind organ grinder, and was recently married to Amanda Ross.
The state board of education meets Saturday to fix irregularities in the contract for next year’s school histories. Bindings are unsatisfactory and existing volumes will be recalled and exchanged. Text alterations did not reflect the board’s wishes, delaying history work for three to four weeks as schools begin. The Civil War era has caused ongoing objections from the G A R and partial compliance has followed.
The sparrow and pigeon meet at Capital City cycle grounds closed Thursday afternoon after six events, with top scores by Upson and Cook. Event results show Upson frequently leading in sparrow races, while Jack Snipe and Thomas also posted high marks across several events.
The body of George B. Mauk who died Wednesday in a Missouri town arrived in Indianapolis Thursday night and was taken to his father William B. Hauk at 664 Broadway for funeral arrangements.
