First Type for Paper Now One of Country's Great Dailies
Oscar M. Holcomb celebrated his eighty first birthday with his wife at the English hotel. He came to Indianapolis for the last Mexican war veterans reunion and set the first stick of type for the Chicago Tribune over sixty years ago. He helped organize the Chicago typographical union and is among the ninety four surviving veterans. Born near Cincinnati in 1820, he moved to Pekin Illinois as a boy, later to Chicago, then apprenticed as a printer. He enlisted to fight Mexico, later walked with his father to California, endured Indian thefts, and returned east to publish papers in Eldora and Bloomfield, later serving seven years as Bloomfield mayor. He said he is proud to have been a printer, not a soldier.
