Tension rose as ships from cholera ports were held for quarantine in New York and Bremen. Reports described new cases and deaths in Paris, London, and other cities, with medical officials tracing transmissions and enforcing inspections while Washington urged strict port controls.
The Bendricks celebration in Indianapolis features Vice-presidential candidate Stevenson as the honored guest. He arrives by train at 3 PM with A J Cooper of Illinois. A reception follows at Grand hotel and a coordinated escort to Tomlinson hall for the 8 PM event.
At Amzenika during maneuvers eight soldiers from the fifty sixth regiment were killed by a lightning strike while marching. Several other soldiers were injured in the incident reported from Vienna dated September 6.
The Virginia avenue viaduct opening committee meets in the council chamber Friday evening September 9 to outline plans for the event. The opening is set for Wednesday September 14 and organizers anticipate a great affair after a week of hard work.

A Western New York and Pennsylvania passenger train was struck by a freight at full speed near Avon causing a telescoped wreck. Engineer Thomson and fireman Gordon were injured, the conductor Savage suffered a broken ankle, mail agent Cheney died from a head wound, a woman passenger was severely hurt, while many excursionists escaped serious harm. Local officials reported several other incidents and various court and civic notes followed in the city.
Attorney general Green Smith accuses Senator Shockney of lying over his denial that he voted for the tax law. He cites Senate records showing all Republican senators supported the bill as written. John W. Kern and others push Shockney to accept the record or admit misrepresentation. A Henry County suit challenges apportionment law, with next hearing set. Democratic speakers announced for state campaign events across several counties. Local boards discuss property assessments, including Indiana Pipeline Co. and New Albany street railway. French maneuvers draw attention of military attaches though the U.S. minister’s envoy attendance is pending.
Vircennes Ind Sept 6 Rev Sam Small temperance evangelist who spoke in Hazleton was shot in the thigh Monday night as he prepared to retire at his hotel. A mob disrupted a meeting earlier and a revolver fired through a window left him wounded. Police seek the assailant. Small rests at the hotel unsure of the wound’s fate if infection drifts.
Keen reports filthy conditions on 8 Liberty street where Italians sell fruit with chickens frying among ripe bananas in beds. He also cites alleys between Carterst north to Walcott Randolph as slop dumps. Warrants issued for Joseph Schawb Valentine Hauf John Weilacher and James Patterson for street slop dumping.
Shelbyville reports a bold highway robbery as Simeon Stafford republican nominee for county assessor is held up in the street and robbed of 40 dollars early Tuesday morning. The city also notes the county fair opening Tuesday as a local attraction.
On a canal north of the city at Coney Island a colored worker named William Baker and another man Meizer clashed over a dispute. Baker fired two revolvers wounding Meizer in the head slightly. Baker was arrested for assault with intent to kill. Meizer denied being shot and faced perjury charges after witnesses corroborated a gun report. Bond set at $1,000 each, grand jury to decide. In a separate suit Lafayette D. Railsback sues Helton J. Hancock for $10,000, claiming a failed contract over a patent plow sale. Railsback says he earned $20,600 in sales but was not paid his share.
A massive stone and iron jail rises opposite the police station on Als kamast. The secure, cage-like rooms with rough stone walls and steel interiors promise strong defenses against escapes. Completion will take several weeks, and the structure is poised to be the finest of its kind in the state. Beecham's pills and Avera's arsaparila are briefly mentioned in a stray endorsement.
New Orleans reports the dramatic light weight championship bout at the Olympic club where McAuliffe defeated Myer in a grueling 15 round match. The crowd of 6,560 watched a fierce contest with knockdowns and mounting tension as McAuliffe claimed victory and a $15,000 prize amid cheers and champagne. Corbett and Sullivan figures prepared, while Dixon Skelly follow the next event with betting odds and prep noted.
A. W. Bigham, brother of a former Indianapolis Sentinel proprietor, was struck by a runaway team in Washington on Tuesday morning. He sustained a broken collar bone and a broken arm and was unconscious for two hours.
A large Monday crowd witnessed day one of the Zig-Zag cycling meet with riders from Indianapolis Chicago Minneapolis and Peoria competing in novice half mile one mile and five mile handicap races. Winners included W W McCain Ef L Dynes H S McNeely C W Davis Bert Meyers and F F Rough with a world record time of 3 21 and a half minutes in the fourth race.
