Fire at Fleanor hospital drives evacuations on Tuesday
Nineteen sick and crippled children aged two months to fourteen years were carried from the second story of the Fleanor hospital on Eighteenth street and Capitol avenue as smoke from a third floor closet filled the building. Nurses woke the children, wrapped them in blankets, and helped them to nearby dwellings before city ambulances ferried them to City hospital where none were seriously ill. The blaze damaged the supply closet surgery area and caused about a thousand dollars in damages.
