Thomas A. Scott, a bricklayer and Union No. 3 member, died likely from laudanum overdose after locking himself in a hotel room at George Hotel. He had visited the hotel several times recently and was heavily drinking. A whisky bottle and an empty laudanum bottle were found. The body was taken to Whitsett's morgue.
Martin Julian proposed to fight Fitzsimmons for a 10000 purse on October 51 if controlled by local authorities. Julian later accepted a 10400 purse from Hot Springs athletic club for a fight under its direction. Corbett declared he is done with Fitzsimmons and will retire if no challenger remains. He also said training quarters would close immediately.
In Indianapolis the grand council of royal and select masters held sessions with a banquet at the Grand hotel. Elections took place Tuesday night and Wednesday. The grand chapter met Wednesday afternoon as AM masons discussed order affairs. A remark sparked laughter as Mortimer Nye was asked who is the oldest mason, and a man quipped that the oldest is dead.
Queens ships report Majestic passing Daunt's Rock Wednesday morning one hour late amid superb weather. Mails and passengers transferred in 22 minutes here. Mails to London expected Thursday morning. St Louis must reach here by Wednesday night to beat Majestic for London mail delivery.
Thos. McCoy of 119 First Avenue was likely fatally stabbed in the heart with a hat pin by his separated wife during a dance with a stranger at a Fernando Wall ball Sunday night. The wife fled with the other woman and remains at large as police search.
The F. M. B. A. held its annual meeting at English's hotel on Tuesday afternoon. They urged impartial enforcement of the Nicholson law and supported a farmers' centennial exposition in 1900. Resolutions denounced immortality shows at fairs and backed enforcing gambling laws. The Cuban issue was debated with a call for U. S. recognition of patriots as belligerents. Officers were elected including Dr C A Robinson president and J A Burtnett delegate to the November general assembly.
While in his front yard on 47 New Jersey street a well known Schmidt's brewery collector named Doc? fell forward dead at 10 30 Tuesday night. His wife and eight children left. Maprio October 28 reports three torpedo boats will be sent to Cuba immediately.
Harry Rader riding a bicycle spotted two burglars fleeing after a break in on Cornellave at 1:15 PM. The assailants J Z Hegins and Chas Walker, armed briefly, dropped a revolver and fled. Rader pursued them through streets until police intercepted. A skeleton key, diamond brooch and valuables were found on the suspects.
A boiler explosion at the Lomax factory near Lomax TL shakes the town. Proprieter Tes enham and worker Wille were among the injured and killed. John Knimaes identified as a bailer. Laborer Wille died instantly as steam seared him. others received severe injuries.

Mrs Anna Rouse was struck and killed by a Big Four train Tuesday afternoon near Acton. She attempted to cross a small bridge, ran between the rails as the locomotive approached, and was fatally injured. The train, traveling about 50 miles per hour, left her dead with husband and several children left behind.
San Francisco on October 28 reports active fundraising and broad support to lure the Republican National Convention. Prominent leaders from all parties back efforts to bring the event to the city, with subscriptions begun for a $100,000 fund.

The steamboat City of St Augustine bound for Jacksonville burned 18 miles off Cape Hatteras Tuesday morning. The Orizaba found no crew aboard and officials suppose all 15 crew members are lost. The ship carried a full cargo of general merchandise with no passengers aboard.
A court martial will be instituted in South Bend once Con Meee returns. The Adjutant-General Robbins ordered an inquiry into the looting by members of the South Bend company. Evidence has been submitted and the offenders are known. The company’s pay from the last encampment is being withheld until the case ends.

Chris Miller shot his wife in CarvincoTon Ohio and fled to the barn where he hanged himself. Mrs Miller was wounded in the back of the neck and is in critical condition. Miller, about 46, leaves six children and had been under dementia evaluation weeks earlier.
San Francisco report says Durant asked Cooper College classmate Dr Graham to obtain notes of a lecture and to leave them with Mrs Durant in prison. Graham testified he refused and never visited Durant again. Jurors watched Durant closely as testimony proceeded.
A colored man testified he followed a lead to recover his stolen dog. He says he whistled near the suspect’s house and the dog, recognizing its master's call, jumped a six foot fence to reunite with him. The scene occurred in the courthouse basement on Tuesday afternoon.

Lewis alleges Dawson visited his home day and night while he was away and gave money to Mrs Lewis. He states Dawson turned her heart against him and that she told him to leave in November 1893.
