A fire at 6:30 a.m. damaged three residences on Buckle Street including Thomas Ashley at 1930 and G. M. Drury at 1932 with roof loss, and Leroy Templeton at 1928 sustaining interior damage. Cause listed as attic spark from a defective flue. Fire department also responded to a second fire at 712 King Avenue caused by an overheated stove.
Two women, Mrs. Louisa M. French and her sister Mrs. Alicia M. Gardner, were attacked by three men posing as gas inspectors at a Scio Street residence in Rochester. The burglars knocked one to the floor, rendered the other insensible, cut the telephone line, and fled after ransacking valuables worth about $3,000 from the Safety Deposit Company vaults.
Tipton Indiana October 16 Joseph Weishiser a 60 year old widower and wealthy farmer at Ekin attempted to elope with Minnie Emory 20 daughter of a neighbor The couple were pursued and overtaken by Weishiser s daughter on a bicycle who compelled her father to abandon his matrimonial plans Weishiser s wife died years ago and since then his youngest daughter Pauline has managed the household affairs She is accomplished and handsome.
Georgetown Kentucky October 16 Judge Cantrill remains under guard as threats surge after an incident Monday night involving a coffin for his comfort in court. Prosecuting attorney Franklin ordered the security and both he and his wife have received threatening letters. The Powers case key witness Fannie Heffner testified of seeing a messenger boy on capitol steps after Goebel was shot.
In Sampson district court reports Capt. I A Cook testifies that engines were uncoupled on all ships, contradicting earlier statements. Cmdr Newton E Mason, former Brooklyn XO, commends Schley’s conduct as excellent, calm, collected and brave. Marriage notice for Miss Anna Fisher to Herbert Creek appears with home address after Nov 16.
The Pennsylvania railroad company's surgeons' association gathered in the Century club room at the Denison hotel with about 20 members. Dr. B W S Wise man spoke on lethargy in the association and Dr John H Oliver discussed patella fracture treatment. Dr. Charles Van Hoogeveen Sterk, professor of modern languages, was incarcerated Wednesday on a larceny charge. Professor Edw. DuBois, a French teacher, sheltered Sterk Saturday and was described as a friend to strangers who speak French. Detective Ashloon noted the suspect pawned items and wore gold glasses during the incident.
Mrs John Deitrich of 15 West McCarty Street was hurt after a streetcar on Illinois Street activated an electric switch, the car partially overran Washington Street, pinning her between a carriage and the rear of the car. Doctors expect she will recover.
