Fear the Banker May End Life
Peoria Illinois Oct 7 With the casing of the Peoria National bank by order of its directors Saturday the voting of indictments making the total against Newton C Dougherty 100 and the failure of friends to aid him, the banker and educator faces prison. He has priced trust securities amounting to nearly $200000 in shortages. The will thus when arraigned on additional indictments may be unable to pay cash. His son has signed his bond. Indictments will be returned in court Saturday afternoon. State's Attorney Scholes aims to fix the maximum penalty and the accused is watched closely. Dougherty does not deny guilt and says he will make good. He offered money to a business man to refuse to testify. He exhibited himself in public places and seems oblivious to the black cloud over him. Friends fear death by own action and detectives are watching him. The closing of the Peoria National bank will aid the grand jury in probing whether banking laws were violated. The bank is seized to the school board for all cash cashed without proper enforcement. Saturday the bank was closed as the panic spread. The Dime Savings and Trust company faced runs and posted a card restricting withdrawals. Banks report heavy losses in Peoria and many teachers expect their salaries to be delayed due to the bank’s seizure. Newton Dougherty, late superintendent of schools, is linked to the bank’s collapse.
