Oldest railroad machine shops in Brightwood area
Suburban Brightwood prides itself on hosting one of the oldest railroad machine shops in the city and among the first in the United States. For over 25 years the Big Four shoe shop operated at the end of Twenty Fifth Street. The Greenleaf foundry built the original structures and first manufactured railroad turntables before closing. The Hee Line then owned and used the shop as a division point with about two dozen workers. Later the Big Four acquired the property, expanding to nearly 20 acres and employing around a thousand men after various improvements.
