Roscoe Tippes, a 15 year old Negro student, armed with a 28 caliber revolver a razor and whisky, attempted to kill Ada Harris principal of township school No 5 in Norwood Wednesday. Teachers searched him subdued him and notified police. The jury in a related case remained out at 2 pm as it chances for retrial loom.
The appellate court declined to break the Delaware county Turner will. Amanda Turner the childless widow of Frank Turner seeks one third of the estate with Charles Turner, while Frank would leave most to Cynthia Turner or Adaline Thompson. Todd’s home is in Louisville, Kentucky.
Billie Fogarty president of Fidelity Trust will headline the Tenth Ward Democratic club meeting at the club room corner Hoyt avenue and Laurel street. He will urge ward voters to back the Democratic ticket and assist in the election. Joseph P. Turk candidate for city clerk will also speak.
Governor Thomas R. Marshall addressed Columbia City residents at a Presbyterian clubroom dedication where he serves as president. He then spoke at LaGrange’s corn school and planned an address at the Richmond fall festival, wrapping up his current speaking itinerary before a long rest from public speaking.
P Cary state superintendent and Indiana’s R J Aley toured Johnson county inspecting consolidation models with central schools. Detectives warn an incendiary remains active on the south side burning four barns in two days, including a Pleasant street blaze that killed a horse and caused about 400 dollars in losses.
Houston dispatch reports several passengers and Engineer Sweeney injured today in the wreck of Santa Fe train No 17 near Salina three miles from Temple. Cause not reported.
John Alstadt, 63, died at City hospital from injuries after a street sweeper struck by a streetcar on Washington Street and Highland Avenue. The sweeper passed over his body as his mule team bolted. He lived at 1330 Shelby Street.
Edward Mix, the sole American in the Gordon Bennett cup balloon race, won after a 680 mile flight from Schlieren near Zurich to near Warsaw. He landed in a pine tree in Gutowa forest and was arrested by Russian police though passport protection was promised by the American ambassador.
City Controller Breunig criticizes the Monday decision to annex Broad Ripple and warns of enormous costs to provide city services. He cites a $25,330 annual tax base and notes a fire station, lights, water, and police substation would require substantial funding from Indianapolis taxpayers. County towns like Southport Clermont and Cumberland could push for annexation next.
Charles Brown, jailed for larceny in Covington, escaped after slipping on clothing, fleeing officers into the Licking River in Cincinnati. He swam toward midstream before sinking as Chief Rolker fired a warning shot. Brown failed to surface and died.
In Muncie Republicans back Dr. G W H Kemper for mayor by thirty two votes over Charles W Sherrit. John McMillan chosen for city clerk. In Anderson Republicans nominate Dr C Newlin for mayor defeating Harry Hardie Dr B H Pierce and James Hurst. Russell Glerhart named for city clerk and councilmen chosen T C Fisher J W Linder Philip Cook Ernest Hill and Jasper Rozelle. In Greensburg Republicans nominate James Randall for mayor D A Batteron for clerk and councilmen James McKim R P Hamilton Henry Duncan C D Tillson Oscar Miller Joseph Styers.
Charles H. McCarty was granted a divorce from D. Louella McCarty in Judge Weir's court after McCarty testified that his wife joined the Gliggy Bluk denomination in Indianapolis and became fanatical and cruel, refusing housework and being hypnotized by Glan Cook. McCarty says she left and is now in India. Mrs. McCarty sent a letter saying she would make no defense and trusts divine powers for justice.
Edward Wald, a mail carrier, was struck by a Pennsylvania train at the Emerson avenue crossing Tuesday morning. He regained consciousness in the afternoon and his condition at St. Vincent's hospital was greatly improved. he lives at 07 E Washington Street.
Christopher Hasselberger of 910 Torbett Street took in a stray Holstein cow and calf on September 3 awaiting the owner. Police were notified but have not located the owner, and the animals appear to have wandered from a nearby farm near the city.
The ring leaders of the crowd that attacked Bicycle Policemen Stewart and Ready received 30 day terms in the workhouse and fined $50 plus costs. Fined individuals include Lizzie Davis George Boxley Marion Jones Martha Jones and Zena Boxley. The disturbance began when two negro women were arrested Saturday night.
R L Ormsby former Indiana National Guard lieutenant was taken to Saginaw Michigan to answer a embezzlement charge. The warrant from Royal Typewriter company alleges he collected funds not turned in while an agent, now a salesman for an Indianapolis paper firm. He resides at 2512 College Ave. and denies guilt. Detentions led by Detentiva Gerber Holtz Stewart and Smith.
Larry Brennan of the Southside Indianapolis has been appointed custodian of the executive offices at the statehouse. He replaces Hugh Sutherland who resigned recently and is moving to Washington State University as an instructor of political economy. Brennan begins his duties Friday and is known for his work at the Indianapolis News building.
