In a dramatic 15 mile yacht race from Sandy Hook to Highlands New Jersey Columbia overtook Shamrock after a close duel. Wind drift and time allowances kept the outcome close with Columbia prevailing by her time allowance as Shamrock finished minutes earlier.
Highlands New Jersey October 4. Captain Barr steered Columbia to victory over Shamrock in a dramatic race. The crowd watched as sails filled suddenly with balloon jib and spinnaker before crossing the line thirteen seconds ahead. Spectators cheered Barr's bold maneuvering at the start and finale.
In New York City on October 4, delegates at the Democratic city convention chose Edward M. Shepard of Brooklyn for mayor. Richard Croker presided with a cold demeanor as a hostile gallery heckled.
