Chicago convention chaos as William R Hearst fails to arrive for 2 p.m. start while others speculate he walked from Leamon to Indianapolis. Reports name Orville G Hursen as a decoy. Delegates fill seats, program altered, and local committee scramble to manage amid widespread uncertainty.
Lewis Stevenson reports illness in Chicago preventing attendance. National chairman Jones takes over as presiding officer. Tomlin Gen Hall decor by Tim Griffin earns praise as the finest in a century. Mayor Taggart opens with an address of welcome. Jones replies as afternoon speakers include Mayor Jones Toledo J Hamilton Lewis Washington and Gov McMillin Tennessee.
The afternoon session at Tomlinson hall opened around two o clock or later with the hall possibly half full. Tickets were available for the asking in the morning, and about 600 delegates, both men and women, occupied seats.
Meyer Jones of Toledo, a businesslike independent, speaks to a SUN man claiming patriotism over party, favors no party program, and supports Bryan while predicting brighter prospects for Ohio and Indiana. He argues the full dinner pail slogan is insufficient, saying a soul needs more than a full stomach.
Niagra Falls alderman Thomas O'Reilly expresses strong belief in Croker's ability to swing New York state for the Democratic column. He claims Croker will win by 125000 in New York, compares to McKinley's town majority of 300, and asserts Bryan will receive 600 there this year.
Rooms have been reserved at the Grand for the event. Headquarters do not know Bryan's exact arrival time. Fort Wayne hotelman Frank Purcell, a delegate, predicts Allen County will pile up a 4000 vote majority for Bryan this year.
N. J. Hyde of the Board of Safety charged at the Grand Hotel that railroad discrimination against Democrats caused the crowd shortfall. He cited Roosevelt Day rates and high fares as evidence. Henry C. Cox, a Democratic attorney, echoed the blame, saying railroads refused enough cars to transport the crowd.
At Union station not more than 800 people were reported in the morning, including regular traffic. Credentials were used to issue delegate badges and tickets. The Marion county delegation gathered at Cleveland hall with more badges than at national headquarters. A much larger crowd was expected in the afternoon as Duckworth club from Cincinnati was due at 6 p.m. and managers anticipated other marching clubs arriving.
All Marion county clubs will turn out for a large parade on Wednesday evening. It forms at Illinois and Maryland streets, moves north to Washington, east to Noble, countermarches to Illinois, then north to Market, and east around the monument to Tomlinson hall.
John Wingate and Charles Remy viewed Tuesday night’s gathering with gloom as Republicans worry the event will fail to mobilize. Remy desires a strong rally but fears crowd size, while Wingate warns a frost could dull effort and spark apathy among Republicans.
Cyrus Kingman, kin of Shelby Cullom, charges Wm J Bryan accepted a 150000 payment from silver mine owners to refuse a Democratic nomination without a free silver plank. A Jacksonville, Illinois woman, friend to Bryan, is named as the authority, claiming she witnessed the offer and Bryan’s acceptance.
W J Bryan and his party arrived in Portage Wisconsin at 3 am on Wednesday. Bryan branded the $150000 bribery story as a malicious campaign lie.
Eight year old H Reese lies near death from lockjaw at his father Guido Reese’s home after a scratched toe in the country led to a swollen leg and tetanus. He has been unconscious for days and is kept on opiates, with his bedridden grandmother vigilantly by his side. The parents once suspected a snake bite after he rocked in the grass seeking a cause.

Ex-Press Agent Harrison will stay in New York about ten days and tell Senator Scott’s speakers bureau he will deliver a speech or issue an interview expressing his views on the campaign before his departure.
R C O Benjamin, prominent colored lawyer author editor and race promoter born March 31 1855 in St Kitts West Indies and educated at Oxford, is shot by Michael Moynahan foreman at the city workhouse rock quarry at the registration place in precinct 32 after a drinking incident. He authored race papers including the Colored Citizen and Negro American and opposed McKinley in 1896.
Charles Nelliegh seeks a year in reform school for his 15 year old daughter Delta after she has repeatedly run away and eluded family control. Delta says she is willing to reform with a six month reformatory stay as authorities prepare for trial at the criminal court Wednesday.
Officer Joyce, of the Board of children's guardians, went to 2141 Station St Brightwood after 11 year old Zola Rankin, formerly at Shelbyville Orphans Home, was taken by Martin V Wilkinson a blind man claiming relation. Wilkinson denied abuse allegations. Joyce sought a warrant but lacked sufficient evidence. Zola to be returned to the home.
Fire chief Barrett heads to Charleston with a plan to rally the International Association of Fire Chiefs for the Indianapolis gathering next year. A large turnout is expected, with about 219 men and their families attending, plus many apparatus salesmen. Demonstrations of firefighting devices are part of the program.

Independent operators remain unreconciled to concessions by big companies with a 10 percent offer failing to bring men back. The tie-up is complete with little coal shipped. President Mitchell returned from Wilkesbarre.
